Gone With The Wind (Four-Disc Collector’s Edition) (1939)
RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 9, 2004
Audio Commentary with Film Historian Rudy Behlmer
Rudy Behlmer, who has done great audio commentaries for such classic films as “Casablanca,” “Frankenstein,” “Laura” and “Singin’ In The Rain” does another superb job with “Gone With The Wind.” Behlmer discusses the differences between the movie and the novel it was based on, which scenes were left on the editing room floor (and no longer exist anywhere) and shares many anecdotes about stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and Olivia DeHavilland. There’s also some interesting tidbits about Margaret Mitchell, the author of the book the movie was based on, and how she wanted nothing to do with the production of the film. Definitely worth checking out.
The Making of a Legend: Gone With The Wind (123 min.)
An incredible documentary that takes us into an in-depth journey into every phase of the production of the film. It includes how the rights to the book were acquired, how the book was then tediously and artfully shaped into a screenplay, how the difficult process of financing achieved, how the first director, George cujor was hired and then fired, and the list of memorable moments in this docuimentary just goes on and on and on. Be sure to watch the rare screen tests of Lana Turner, Paulette Godard, Susan Hayward and Joan Bennett, all auditioning for the role of Scarlett. You will leave this documentary knowing everything you need to know about the film. Narrated by Christopher Plummer.
Restoring A Legend (17 min.)
If not cared for perfectly, film deteriorates over time. That’s where the restoration technicians come in. This great little film shows the painstaking lengths the technicians went to to bring the picture and audio quality of Gone With The Wind back to its pristine glory. Split screen comparisons highlight the drastic “before and after” differences.
